Research Skills Big6 - Step 1. Task definition

The purpose of this step is to define the tasks and to identify information needed.

Questions:

  • What is my current task?

  • What do we need to find out?

  • What are some topics or questions I need to answer?  

  • What information will I need to search for?

  • explore general resources for the background knowledge

  • ask questions

  • create concept maps

  • list topics to explore 

 

 

 

 

General Procedures

  1. Students are to form groups of 4 and carry out an inquiry-based learning project about developing an action plan to reduce water pollution in Hong Kong using the Big6 research model.   

  2. With the use of online resources, information literacy skills and online research skills in this blog, each group would have a 10-minute oral presentation.  

  3. Lastly, each group member has to complete the self-reflection form and the peer evaluation form which are available in this blog.

 

 

Before developing the action plan, the following information is required:

What are the water problems in HK? 

What are the causes and effects of water problems in HK?

Find out the government departments which are responsible for the following:

- for the water supply?

- for the sewerage treatment?

- for reducing water pollution?

- for conservation of environment?

What have been done by the Hong Kong Government for the conservation of water quality?

How can we reduce water pollution?

 

Format required

What is an action plan?  How do I develop an action plan?

What should I include in the action plan?

How do I present the action plan?

•It is good for background information

•Students can use it to create a list of phrases, names(people, organizations), dates and related terms

•Use these terms for searching information on topic in school library catalog and databases

•Look at the Reference and External Links sections at the end of Wikipedia entries for sources which can be used and cited in the project.
